NATIONAL TRAVEL & TOURISM WEEK
This week marks the 26th Annual National Travel & Tourism Week. According to the U.S. Travel Association, the collective goal of promoting National Travel &Tourism Week is to “enhance the country’s economy, security and perception, and recognize the cultural and social benefits created by travel and tourism.” No doubt the country’s current economic environment has/will have an impact on the travel industry as a whole, from airfares to Bed & Breakfast bookings and restaurant reservations, to profound decreases in hospitality employee rolls and local/state tax revenues.
Everyone knows someone either directly or indirectly affected by the mighty tourism dollar. For better or worse, it also effects me – a freelance designer working mostly in the hospitality/tourism sector.
WHY TOURISM MATTERS
Other than lobbying your local and state government, or your local Chamber of Commerce, what can you do to promote your region and business to stay-cationers, meeting planners, and tour companies? Check out Seattle’s online public education campaign, Why Tourism Matters, which features local media advertising, public relations, community outreach and cooperative tourism industry communications directed to citizens and business and government leaders.
I designed this simple and effective website while on staff at Seattle’s Convention and Visitors Bureau in 2007. It continues to be maintained and elaborated on by SCVB, and I frequently browse through the site when searching for new facts and links about the tourism industry’s impact on the local and national economy.
